A Day In The Curls of J. Sheree

J. Sheree’s Interview

Question: How long have you been natural?
Answer: 2 years on Feb 21st

Question: At what age did you start getting relaxers?
Answer: Probably, 10 I would say.

Question: Why did you make the decision to stop getting relaxers?
Answer: I dyed my hair and it left my hair feeling extremely brittle and falling out, so I cut it all off to                  about an inch all over.

Question: How did people react to your decision to go natural?
Answer: A lot of people didn’t agree because I had “so much hair” that I just wasted.

Question: Do you feel that having gone natural has effect you in any way?
Answer: Yes, because thinking about what I put in my hair makes me think about what I put in my body more now. So, I tend to look at labels more, I’m not perfect at it but I’m getting there.

Question: Do you feel that it has affected your art or your music?
Answer: Yes, I don’t know why, but I feel more soulful and I can’t really explain the connection. Embracing my hair naturally makes me want to embrace my natural voice, I naturally have a soulful voice but I tend to try to seeing more poppy even though that is not really me.

Question: Where can we find J. Sheree?
Answer: You can find me probably at work, lol. No, seriously, I will be at Stone Soup in Ybor on Wednesdays and I am also local rapper Jonah’s mixtapes and have plans to feature on a few other local artists’ mixtapes. I am also working on the courage to become a regular at Sacred Grounds Slam and Open Mic at The Roosevelt 2.0.

Question: What can we expect from J. Sheree in 2013?
Answer:I am working on doing more performances; I would love to do a mixtape if I am able to gain the right connects. Plus, I’m learning the guitar, so I and Lucille will be making a debut.

Question: What are your personal hair goals?
Answer: I want to be more consistent in keeping up with doing and maintaining the healthiness of my hair.

Question: What are your hair “guilty pleasures”?
Answer:  I would say that mine is straightening my hair.

Question: What is your favorite product to use in your hair?
Answer: My favorite product would probably be Shea Butter because it holds in my curls.

Question: Question: What is your signature hairstyle?
Answer: A curly side fro.

Question: What is your advice to other curlies who are working on their stage fright?
Answer: Don’t think too much about it, just do and continue to do.

Day 7 of 365

Day 7 of 365

Day 7: a show or a movie that has changed you, and how

I am going to insert the option of book here.
A book that changed me would be "The Color of Water".
This book is a black man's tribute to his white mother.
Growing up in the south definitely made skin tone a big issue.
All of my siblings are much darker than me and I dealt with being picked on a lot because of it.
This book showed me a similar struggle but in such a different way.
This black man was raised by his Jewish white mother and knew very little about his heritage on either side due to his mother's family shunning her for loving a black man.
It put my own struggle in a whole other perspective and allowed me to recognize that not only do other people have to deal with this but they have to deal with it in much deeper ways than me.

Day 6 of 365

Day 6 of 365

Day 6: something you would like to change about yourself

Something that I would like to continue to work on changing about myself would be my self doubt.

Wicked Wednesday: Afros in LGBT History

Just in time for the last Wednesday of June, Wicked Wednesday returns with famous natural LGBT people throughout history. June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.

James Baldwin
August 2, 1924 - December 1, 1987
James Baldwin was a playwright, essayist and novelist that made a great impact during the 60’s civil rights era.
He was noted for his radical perspective on both race and sex issues and the weight they placed on those that didn’t subscribed to the norms. He states that he knew he was gay before he was even seven years old.
When he formally addressed his sexuality he stated the following:
"[T]here were so many labels on my back beginning with'nigger.' By the time I was 14, I went through a kind of nervous breakdown, which happened when I, was a preacher, and by the time I was 17, 1 had survived all the labels, including the label of 'faggot.' It wasn't and it isn't, easy."
Other novels by Baldwin include Another Country, Giovanni’s Room, and Just Above My Head. Baldwin considers Just Above My Head a big step in his literary career as well as his personal life as he finally found the courage to write about homosexuality between black gays.

Alvin Ailey
 January 5, 1931 - December 1, 1989
Alvin Ailey was born in 1931 in Rogers, Texas. He developed a love for dance after moving to Los Angeles and seeing Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. He was never ignorant to his attraction to the same sex but it would seem he was never quite at ease with it either.
He danced with Lester Horton’s troupe, whom he studied under, after he decided to leave college. Upon Horton’s passing, he was ordained director of the company. His work was admired but still, jobs for black dancers were far and few between. So he started his own company, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958.
Though he rarely spoke of his personal affairs, he also did not hide his sexuality. After his long term relationship ended with a schoolteacher whom assisted him in managing his dance company, he found himself involved in a great number of short flings with young men he met at gay bars.
Ailey passed on in 1989 due to AIDS related complication that he requested to be listed as terminal blood dyscrasia. Due to his gentle yet shameless sexuality, he was known as a silent advocate for both Gay and African American communities.

Angela Davis
Angela Davis is a well know and well respected name in Civil Rights movements all over. She played a leading role in not only the Black Civil Rights movement but in the rights of women, prisoners, gays and basically any form on injustice that she could get her hands on.
She has also been an open lesbian since 1997 when she shared her sexuality with the world in Out Magazine. She shared this news with great reluctance, after already experiencing such great discrimination already; adding being a lesbian of color during such harsh times took great bravery.
Sexuality in the Black Panther Party was considered both taboo and open when it came to women. Although women were still not considered equals in the party and still had to fight twice as hard as men to be respected.
Davis has worked and continues to work as an activism to discrimination with a special interest in prisoner’s rights. She has created the Critical Resistance organization with the goal of putting an end to the prison system. She also created the African American Agenda 2000 in continued support of black feminists.

Johnny Mathis
Johnny Mathis was once known for his athletic abilities as oppose to his singing voice. Through his father’s encouragement he developed his talents as a singer and dancer. After years of vocal training, including opera, and performing at home, school and church, he eventually began a gig at Ann Dee’s 440 Club at the age of 19.
After receiving offers to both compete in the Olympics and pursue his music career in 1956, Mathis chose his music and has since sold 350 million records worldwide. By 1958, he was already releasing a greatest hits album.
In 1982 he shared with US Magazine that he was accustomed to his homosexual lifestyle which induced letters of death threats.

Felicia "Snoop" Pearson
Felicia “Snoop” Pearson was not born into the most ideal circumstances. Born at 3 pounds, she was not expected to live. When it was found that she would survive, she was raised by foster parents as her birth parents were both incarcerated drug addicts. She received her GED in prison where she was serving 2 eight year terms for murder.
Her life took a turn for the better when after the death of her father figure Arnold Loney, while she was locked up.
Once released, she was spotted at a club and asked to audition for a part on “The Wire" due to her over sized personality.
Person has always been openly gay and discusses it in a memoir entitled Grace After Midnight, a story in a series about a gay woman in a man’s world.
Tracy Chapman
Signed to Elektra Records in 1987, Tracy Chapman had been preparing for this opportunity since she was 8 years old. Growing up in modest surrounding, she learned to channel her emotions into her music at a very young age. She was even one of the earliest modern artists of color to discuss race issues and politics in her music.
She won several Grammys for her single "Fast Car" from her debut album and was even invited to perform it at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday celebration. She has also won Grammys for many other songs.
Chapman has never openly discussed her sexuality with the public but she has been romantically linked to several women including Alice Walker, the author of The Color Purple. When asked about the affair and its secrecy, Walker replied with“It was quiet to you maybe but that’s because you didn’t live in our era."

Do you have any kinky LGBT icons to add to the list?

Day 5 of 365

Day 5 of 365

Day 5: something you would change about the world

If I had the ability to change something about the world, it would be the lack of understanding that we possess for one another.
I think that the only way that we could demolish uncalled for violence and hatred would be if we were truly able to put ourselves in each other's shoes and understand one another.

Secret Life of the Bobby Pin

Secret Life of the Bobby Pin
As, we all know, bobby pins are a natural’s best friend. They are basically the cornerstone for every hairstyle that we create.
Not so very long ago, a friend of mine tagged me in a picture on Facebook that displayed the proper way to use a bobby pin. (displayed on the left.)

I immediately went into denial and/or conspiracy theory mode. I even thought someone made the picture to see how many people would fall for it and change the way they use their bobby pins. I know; crazy!
Anyway, I finally left my state of denial after buying a pack of curved bobby pins and finding that the curve was facing the side that I usually placed outward (displayed on the right) confirmed that my theories were all incorrect.
It turns out that the grooved side is supposed to be facing your scalp. The grooves were made to grasp the hair and secure it into place. While the flat side of it actually helps to move the hair into the grooves of the bobby pin.
Also, did you know why there are called bobby pins? In the 20’s women use to wear their hair in a style referred to as “bobbed” which basically looks like French waves but hanging, and the bobby pins were used to hold this style in place.
Here are a few other tips for your future bobby pin use:
·         Bobby pins are fairly inexpensive but still; do not skim on cost when picking your bobby pins.
·         Try your best to pick bobby pins that compliment your hair color, unless of course you are using them as an accessory.
·         Crossing the bobby pins can create a stronger hold.
·         They say that using your teeth to open the bobby pin compromises the integrity of the bobby pin, opening the bobby pin causes it to become loose. They are meant to just sliiiide into your hair. (I don’t know if I can get with this rule lol)
Well, this has been the secret life of the bobby pin exposed, I hope I wasn’t the only one still doing this wrong.

Day 4 of 365

Day 4 of 365

Day 4: how you think your life would change if you achieved your dream

I think that my life would change if I achieved my goal because it would give my undeniable hope.
One of my goals was to become a better slam poet, allowing me to become a better poet in general.
So, I dedicated myself to monthly slams and I went from being knocked out in the first round to winning my local slams.
But, most importantly it gave me the courage to go to Southern Fried 2013 and slam like I never thought I could.
I have been working on being a seen poet and not just a scene poet.
Making it to final stage with my team, The Misfits, made me feel like all the work that I have been doing and am continuing to do on myself as a person and a poet is not in vain.
Achieving my other goals will make me feel like that about my life in general!

Genie Locs

Genie Locs

I recently made the decision to test out Genie Locs aka Yarn Plaits as a protective style for my trip to New Orleans for Southern Fried 2013. I must say that I loved them but they are no easy feat.
I watched several Youtube videos before I decided which method would be best to use when embarking upon this journey. According to my research I learned the following:
·         On average it takes about 17-22 hours to install
·         You must keep your hair oiled during the process because the yarn will dry it out
·         They can be a bit heavy
·         You must both knot and burn the ends
·         Do not burn the ends too long or it may cause discoloration of the yarn

Things I learned from my own experience:
·         They are extremely heavy when wet
·         It takes almost the same amount of time to take them out as it takes to put them in
·         It is a very cheap hairdo (one ball of yarn typically can cover the whole head)
·         You will need a nice strong gel to keep the ends of your hair contained (yuck)
Now let’s get to the how to’s.
      Things you will need
·         A ball of yarn of your color choice. (it is best to use acrylic yarn)
·         Scissors
·         A lighter
·         An oil of your choice (I used grapeseed and olive)
·         Gel of your choice (I used Gorilla Snot and Gummy)
·         Lots of patience

*You will most likely want to do a deep conditioning before placing this style in your head, whichever deep conditioning you would typically use before installing a protective style or weave. *
1.)  Decide how big and how long you want your genie locs. I did shorter 2 strands on my edges so that I would not weigh them down too much and longer 3 strands on the rest of my hair.
2.)  Cut the yarn into the length that you would like. (I found that it was easiest to cut up as much yarn as possible in one sitting so that the cutting process wouldn’t slow you down later.)
3.)  Oil the strands of yarn that you plan to use for your plait. This will help keep the yarn from drying out your hair as it is wrapped around it.
4.)  Decide the method that you would like to use. A lot of people use the crisscross method to start their plaits, I prefer to just loop it around my hair and start the plait.
5.)  Continue to plait your hair as normal using your real hair as the third strand until you have reached almost the bottom of your real hair.
a.  If you decided on using the 2 strand method then you will want to take one of the strand of yarn and place it with your real hair. (You will want to use gel to smooth down your ends with the yarn.) Then continue plaiting as normal and knot the end of the plait.
b.  If you decided on using the 3 strand method then you will want to take two strands of the yarn and place it with your real hair. (You will want to use gel to smooth down your ends with the yarn.) Then continue plaiting as normal and knot the end of the plait.
6.)  Repeat until whole head is finished.
7.)  Burn the ends of each plait and roll the ends in your fingertips while still warm to help seal them closed.
This is a very long tiresome process, but I did enjoy the look of it and it is a style that can last for quite a while. You will need to make sure that you keep the hair moisturized while in this style. I hope you enjoy!
And…if you do choose to give it a try, don’t forget to share pics by sending them to spokenheart_mf@aol.com.

Day 1 of 365 Challenge

Day 1

Day 1: hopes, dreams and plans with a picture of yourself.
My aspirations for the next year of my life will be to get started on my book club, open mic and finish editing my novel and submit it to more publishing companies.
I plan to continue to commit myself to improving myself as a poet and growing as an artist in general.
I will finish and publish my second poetry book this year.
I will try and make myself more open to those around me and not let my fears dictate my social or personal life.
I will continue to dream and promote myself into financial independence.
I hope to continue to grow as a natural hair advocate and help people of color everywhere learn to love us as we are, whether natural or relaxed, and respect each other’s decisions to live our lives the way we please.
I will continue to improve both my health and my body.
I hope to be a much better me when I read this 364 days from now.
